The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves.
Veterans banded together and formed organizations that would eventually become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
Gadsden Memorial VFW Post 4384 was chartered in 1963 in Anthony, New Mexico under the Congressional Charter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
Gadsden Memorial VFW Post 4384 has been instrumental in assisting local Veterans obtain veteran benefits and many other programs and services that work to support veterans, service members and their families, as well as our surrounding communities.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is a national association of veterans who as soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen served this Nation in wars, campaigns, and expeditions on foreign soil or in hostile waters, and is a federally chartered non-profit organization.
VFW Post 4384 consists of Veteran members and Auxiliary members. At VFW Post 4384 our Auxiliary members are the backbone of our VFW Post and are related to a veteran who has served overseas in a location of foreign conflict, earning the campaign medals eligible for membership. Veterans can be a living or deceased spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent or grandchild.
The purpose of the VFW are fraternal, patriotic, historical, charitable, and educational, and are:
1. to preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members;
2. to assist worthy comrades;
3. to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead, and to assist their surviving spouses and orphans;
4. to maintain true allegiance to the Government of the United States, and fidelity to its Constitution and laws;
5. to foster true patriotism;
6. to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom; and
7. to preserve and defend the United States from all enemies.
